Task 1:
However, in “bully” the teens are showing being aggrieve to each other, this stands up to the game’s title as “bully”. The characters are shown in their school uniform and in the school itself which shows that their life is revolved around their school. In a scene a student is showing saying soon this school will be ours” this shows that the teenagers life is revolved around their college.
2)The media text can be seen as a moral panic as parents may think that their children playing games such as “bully” or watching drama shows such as “skins” will influence their kids to do what ever the characters do in the media text. For example, “bully” may influence teenagers to be rebels and be trouble makers, this will cause a moral panic.
On the other hand, “skins” may influence teenagers to have sex and smoke. This will cause moral panic as it will make teenagers put their life in danger by smoking which then can lead to drugs and the show can also influence teenagers to have sex which can lead to teen pregnancy.
3)New digital media has given younger audience the opportunities to shape heir own media representation, this is done by giving teenagers a verity of media text to select from, all consisting of different themes and concepts. For example, “skins” will be targeted at free spirits as the show is about living life to the fullest . however, “bully” will be targeted at arm chair rebels as it shows teenagers rebelling against adults and other teenagers.

Section A
The metro gives a negative representation of youths; this is represented by a picture of black teenager holding a gun. This gives teenagers a stereotypical negative representation as if all teenagers are involved in gang culture, by showing a picture of a teenage holding a gun stereotypically trying to say as if all black teenagers are rebel gangsters.
On the other hand, the daily mail is rephrasing the term “gang of yobs” with “group” which shows a positive representation of the gang culture. Instead of being criticised negatively by the media they are being shown as if they are like any other ordinary group. The teenagers in the daily mail are not labelled as gangsters; however as a group which is a positive representation of teenagers. Daily mails are not representing the teenagers as rebels which are the opposite of what metro are doing.
Consider the view that the current press treatment of teenagers is simply another ‘moral panic’
The current press treatment of teenagers is another moral panic, reason being is because everyone uses the internet and social networks. As metro claims that “how armed teenage thugs recruit on web” this sends a moral panic as parents would not want their kids to be involved in gang cultures. On the other hand, the society would not want to be a victim or involved in the gang culture due to the negative representation of the teenage gang culture as presented in metro.
Articles such as metro’s given teenage groups a stereotypical negative representation as gang members. Metro states that teenage gang’s are recruiting over the internet shows that these teenage gang cultures are growing. This causes a moral panic in the society as people do not want to be associated with gang culture and by knowing that these gangs are growing causes a moral panic.
There are always concerns about new technology. In your view, what are the possible benefits and problems attached to social networking, particularly on the Internet?
The benefits of the social networking in the new media is that social websites such as youtube, twitter, facebook etc is able to bring everyone closer together no matter where people are in the world. People are able to make new friends in a different country and are able to experience how other people are living. Instead of having to waste money on mail or telephone, special network allows the global society to keep in touch within seconds. Social networks such as Skype has allowed people to save money and visually make calls to people across the word, this saves people money as it is free to join so there is no need to make calls.
Social networks allow news to travel faster, for example news such as the civil war in Libya and Egypt etc were able to be heard due to youtube. The audience are able to make their own user generated content are able to get their views across the world and views by a large audience.
The problems attached to social networking are that the society are not going out into the real world and socialising. This is dumbing down the society as they are being anti social and not socialising in person.
On the other hand, as anyone can access facebook, YouTube etc, kids are going in to sites that they shouldn’t and there is no way stopping them. Kids can see YouTube videos regardless the age limit. Social networking sites such as facebook also reveal to much personal information about the users. For example, facebook will reveal the city that the user is living in, what college, school, and university or working place they attend etc. People can easily invade other user’s privacy and find out information. Users can also see other user’s pictures, this is invading privacy.

fuad's ideas
Who do you think benefits most – audience or producers?
Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have allowed producers to get close with their audience. This has allowed producers to easily observe their audience’s trend; by doing this the producers are able to market their products in a way so that it can appeal to their audience. Reason being this is beneficial for producers is because of they do not have to invest a huge amount of money trying to research and develop their product in order to make it appeal to their audience. Instead they can gain the same information from free social networks by keeping in touch with their audience and observing what the present trend is.
This new digital media allows producers to save a huge amount of money.
In addition, social networks has also reduced cost for marketing as producers are able to upload adverts on YouTube and promote the link through facebook, MySpace, twitter etc. This new digital media has allowed producers to save thousands of pounds as they do not need to hire a PR to promote their product, instead the producer can do it themselves with tools such as the social networks to reach out to their audience. This also benefits the producers as they are able to go global through the social networking sites, this means that the producers can seek out to their audience in different countries and expand their target market. By doing this, new digital media will allow producers to get more recognition.
On the other hand, social websites such as youtube has allowed the audience themselves to get recogniced with their talent. For example, justin bieber and jessi j were part of the audience trying to take on the role of a producer. By useing youtube, they were able to make user generated contents to get themselfs recognised. This is benefits the audience as they can easily put themslefs in the producers position and the audience will have a verity of music to listen to instead of the same producers. For example, with the audience making their own songs means that the audience can listen to proudcers or other audience memebers putting themself in a producers position .
New digital media provide wed sites such as picnik which allows producers and the audience to edit their photos for free. This is a advantage for both producers and the audience because the producers will be reducing the expenses of not hiring a professional to edit their picture when they can do it themself. On the other hand, the audience are also able to use this website to produce their own pictures for album, poster, website etc. This reduces cost and gives a professional quality which is beneficial for both the producers and the audience, as the producers will be reducing their expenses and the audience will not need to buy or hire and professional equipment or softwear in order for them to make their own product.
Additionally, online distribution has also benefitted both the audience and producers in it’s own way, online distribution such as I-tunes, imesh, musicstation, napster, nimbit, playnow etc. Online distribution is benificial for producers as they do not have to invest in raw material to make cd’s, cd cases, booklet etc. Instead they can send it through online which reduced the distribution cost therefore producers are able to make more profit.

Next step:wider research
YouTube have direct payment to record labels for playback rights, therefore producers are still able to make profit even if the audience are watching the videos for free. The audience are using the internet instead of buying records, this is beneficial for them as it is free music.
Radio has been replaced with online radio, this is beneficial for the audience as the quality is better and the audience can listen to past shows that they have missed out.
Website such as MySpace are establishing new artist, this is better for producers as they don’t have to invest huge amount on A&Rs to go and find new talent. The internet has given artist the power to gain the right amount of money and percentage that they earn, this is beneficial for the producer as they are getting all the rights that they deserve.
Artist can be a part of the audience and get closer to them, this brings the producers in the aduience’s seat, by doing this the producers are able to easily follow the trend without having to invest into R&D. For example, Twitter allows fans to keep up and talk to the artist in real time. Twitter has allowed the audience to get closer to the artist and has allowed them to interact with the artist.
Sites such as YouTube has allowed artist to aim at a bigger and larger target market, allowing them to go global, this is beneficial for the producer as they can expand their target market. Audience are able to generate their own music on YouTube and listen to other user generated content. The audience have become the producers.
Audience have stopped buying music as they can get it for free, this is shutting down major retail stores such as HMV and major labels, this is beneficial for the audience as they are getting free music however a draw back for the producers.
Customers get more choices of artist as the audience themselves are producing music. The audience have more power of their UGC and what they listen when ever they want. Jessie J and Justin Bieber have been able to be gain recognition from major record label.
Net Neurality
What is net neurality?
Net neurality is the principle that all internet traffic – content, platforms, and websites – should be treated equally by the networks that deliver them.
Is the internet neutral?
The internet today is, mostly, a level playing field. We pay a fee to have access to the internet. Web services pay to host their content and to for that content to be accessible. And internet service providers pay for the bit in between – the connection.
Should it be?
That would leave non-commercial sites on a poorer, slower web where they would find it harder to attract readers – changing the democratic nature of the internet. It would also mean poorer users, or those in the developing world, would find it harder to access the "full" internet experience.
New york times:
What is net neurality?
The concept of “net neutrality" holds that companies providing Internet service should treat all sources of data equally. It has been the center of a debate over whether those companies can give preferential treatment to content providers who pay for faster transmission, or to their own content, in effect creating a two-tier Web, and about whether they can block or impede content representing controversial points of view
Is the internet neutral?
Currently, Internet users get access to any Web site on an equal basis. Foreign and domestic sites, big corporate home pages and low-traffic blogs all show up on a user’s screen in the same way when their addresses are typed into a browser.
Should it be?
The rules, which address some of the principles of so-called network neutrality, will be tested in the courts in the months ahead, and Republicans said that they would challenge the rules in Congress as well. (it should be)
Who do you think benefits most – audience or producers?
New digital media has developed to suit the audience’s needs however this has also benefited producers. The impact of the change benefits both audience and producers as audience have easier access to music, along with a verity of artist to select from and producers have more beneficial methods to market and distribute music. In the following I will discuss who I think new digital media benefits the most.
Social networking sites such as facebook, twitter, YouTube etc have allowed producers to get close with their audience. This has allowed producers to easily observe their audience’s trend; by doing this the producers are able to market their products in a way so that I can appeal to their audience. The mutualisation of news
"The development of the internet, and with it the creation of citizen journalists" new digitel media has given the audience to create their own news with user generated content.
"What we are doing is taking down those bricks, lowering the barrier and positively encouraging the relationship between the two. This gets over the tired argument that this is an either/or battle between old media and bloggers" bloggers are taken over as they are producing free news and taking over journalists role.
"These bloggers who write for us could have done it very happily on their own, but what we offer them is the influence and the clout and an incredibly interesting audience to commune with" companies are trying to build a relation with bloggers as money is being lost due to their hobby of blogging.
"Rusbridger believes new applications such as Twitter make it increasingly possible for individual journalists to publish outside the constraints of our newspaper and website and develop direct relationships with communities of readers" journalists having a spiceal relation with the reader is not spiceal because everyone is blogging and creating the same relation through twitter.
"The Guardian technology pod had 682,000 followers on Twitter in June 2009, which is nearly twice as large as the number of people who buy the Guardian every day" newpapers companies are useing new digitel media to compete with bloggers, guadian is useing twitter to compete with bloggers. this may be as readers prefer to get news of the net compared to buying newspapers. Reason being that journalists may also be losing readers is because now days everyone prefers to get news of the internet. due to this people will rather prefer to get news free from bloggers rather then buy newspaper. This is breaking the relation between journalists and readers however before "There was a very clear wall, dividing readers and writers"
The impact of new and digital media case study
Record sales have been hit by the trend for more digital downloading of music while a number of high-profile album releases have been badly disappointed. New digital media has given more ways to artist to get heard become famous and now make a living off their music now than at any point. Technology has made it possible for any artist to get distributed, to get discovered, to pursue their dreams. Social network such as twitter, facebook etc are being used to promote music.
What impact has there been on the way in which the audience now consume the media product/texts involved in your case study? How does it differ from what went before?
Before consumers would buy from shops, then downloading began. This made the music industry lose profit. Reason being they are using digital media to try encouraging the target market to buy music. You tube have made a deal and have signed a contract with labels so they can show music videos. Before people had to watch videos on TV. HMV are shutting down 60 stores because online distributers have taken over. One of the major online distributer is I-tunes
What impact has there been on how the media institution now has to produce the texts and the way in which the texts/products are distributed and exhibited?
Music is being sold as digital MP3 format. It is fast, easy and cheap to buy. YouTube has reduced music industry sales figures. YouTube is labelled under “web 2.0”. YouTube have direct payment to record labels for playback rights. People are using the internet instead of buying records. Radio has been replaced with online radio. Website such as MySpace are establishing new artist. The internet has given artist the power to gain the right amount of money and percentage that they earn.
Is the size of the audience any different now than before the impact of new and digital media?
Artist can be a part of the audience and get closer to them. Twitter allows fans to keep up and talk to the artist in real time. Sites such as YouTube has allowed artist to aim at a bigger and larger target market, allowing them to go global. For example, Jay Sean was able to be recognised by Cash money records, his fan base was only based in European countries and India however he was recognised by cash money through YouTube and was able to be signed to them. Due to this, is has now gone international and is known in more than 20 countries.
How have the audience responded to the changes? Is there more customers choice? Is there evidence of a more pluralistic model? What evidence do you have to support this?
Audience are able to generate their own music on YouTube and listen to other user generated content. The audience have become the producers. Audience have stopped buying music as they can get it for free, this is shutting down major retail stores such as HMV and major labels. Customers get more choices of artist as the audience themselves are producing music. The audience have more power of their UGC and what they listen whenever they want. Jessie J and Justin Bieber have been able to be gain recognition from major record label. Twitter has allowed the audience to get closer to the artist and has allowed them to interact with the artist.
What concerns/considerations are there (if any) for the media institutions involved in your case study as a result of the impact of new and digital media?
Stores are being show down (HMV), labels are shutting down, artist are not making much money, labels are not making much money, companies providing with distribution services such as CD are making less profit TV channels such as MTV are losing views, to reduce cost MTV are reducing the number of employees.
Consider the effects so far, and possible effects in the future, on media institution involved in your case study?
Labels will need to find new methods of distributing music without customers downloading music for free. The audience have chose to download music instead of buying it from the shop and they prefer to watch music videos on youtube rather then look at music channels.
